Well, it looked pretty grim at 4:30 PM, a dense in-penetrable fog hung over the race course, what difference a 1/2 hour makes. Tom poked Chumly beyond the breakwater … suddenly there were the Isles of Shoals. Yup it rained, yup it was cold but the most fun I have had in a long time.
A course D was set with a 5-10 knot easterly and a heavy current holding the fleet back from starting early. Six boats answered the gun. A clean start, split the fleet early, the traditionalist staying left early, some hunting wind lines on the right side. Caleb rounded first and held the position for the bullet. The middle of the fleet was more interesting, positions changing many times. FruitCakes held the middle with the corner hunters Stay Calm and Powderwhore looking for the big lift on the right…
Caleb and the crew put on a great feed at KPYC, the warm Gumbola hit the spot. Thanks Caleb

The weather has been so cold and rainy, we managed to race on the single clear night this week, I would like to think my order for the clearing was fulfilled. A decent south, south east breeze held for the entire evening, a bit cold but I'll take it.
Eleven boats showed up, The KPYC Sailing School boat "Che" with Bruno at the helm made its debut, along with a boat from the Kittery Yacht Yard. Only Rear Admiral and Hurricane were missing, among the boats registered. So the fleet will round out somewhere from 13-15 boats. Emmet, how is the allgrip job going on Epic Flight? The rumor is Bill Stewart will be racing on Phat Tail and Hurricane may convert to geranium holder in Bill's driveway…

Tom set up course D with gates for the first and a simple course 1 for the second. A bit more pressure on the right side made it the way to go. Rob Pruyn, also sailing his season opener, got a clean start and worked the right favorably capturing both bullets. Vox was in the hunt in the first, hanging with the front pack at the first rounding. Chuck Pinkerton, managed to find some speed in Phat Tail in the second.
Our social calendar is completely, open with Bad Dog hosting on July 3rd. Please let me know what night you plan to host.

The forecast called for 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots from the south-east. Observed at the Isle of Shoals was 15 knots. So the big question, what to set your rig at ? Those who stayed at the light air setting got it right.
Tom set course D with the weather mark about 3/4 of a mile out, 10 boats answered the gun with Hurricane and Corona taking the night off. At the start a decent 8 knots with big lumps, the line pretty square by my read. Big Ben hit the line with speed at the gun down at the committee boat end, Powderwhore was caught barging and had to go around. The breeze faded making it a slow slog to weather in the big sea. After the leeward rounding the breeze real died, some boats were going backward. It was a night for those with patience, three boat withdrew anticipating an abandonment. 1/2 way up the second weather leg the breeze filled a little, enough to get the fleet moving. Sugaree got to the wind first and got the bullet.

Andy's Race Recap:
Puffy 10-18 knt west winds with virtually no seas, for the most daylight we will see on race night this year. A great night!
Tom set a course D with leeward gates, the line slightly pin favored. 12 boats answered the gun. There were more puffs and pressure on the left, the right seemed flatter and steadier. Rear Admiral stayed left, it worked for him capturing 1st in the first race. Big Ben was called over early in the first spoiling what would have been a great start. Sugaree swapped to the Genoa after the first beat, he won the second race.

Yesterday, I was sure that we would be getting wet and watching out for thunderstorms, fortunately the front passed earlier than expected and we ended up with a very pleasant evening. The winds were N-NE about 10-12 knots with big lumps, clear sky and current at the tail end of the ebb.
12 boats answered the gun with a clean start in both races. The course was the familiar “Delta” with leeward gates, up and down twice. Big Ben got away at the start clean and dug left and managed to hold off Sugaree. Big Ben managed to do it again in the second. Chris Folansbee was driving PBR very short handed but managed to pull out a pair of sevens. Corona and Rear Admiral were amongst the missing. All and all a great night of racing with positions changing on the upwind and downwind legs.

There was a protest by Big Ben against Sugaree noted on the score sheet (R7 or R8?) which was subsequently withdrawn via text message accompanied by some entertaining jousting, now now gentlemen.
Next week, it is Bad Dog’s turn to host the social, so are you ready for that famous Randy Johnson clam chowda?
See you all then.
Best

A delightful night, gentle west winds fading to less than 5 knots at the end of the second race and the biggest moon I have seen in a long time. What a difference a frontal boundary makes, last week we had tornado warnings at race time. I thought a poltergeist had invaded my phone last week with the weird sounds it was making. We had a race committee member hiding in his basement at race time no chance of getting a race in even though Scott Bridge, at every break in the storms thought we should head out; Ah, youth, it's wasted on the young.

Winds 5-10 West fading for R10
This evening Tom reached back into the past and resurrected course 2, no problem for those who read the SI. It is a simple windward leeward with the start in the lower third of the course, adding a short windward leg for the finish.
13 boats raced with Epic Flight and Crazy Horse resting. Crazy Horse hasn't sailed this year but was spotted on the river last week. We hope to have him for the summer series which starts next week.
The fleet was very eager at the starts, Big Ben, Hurricane, Powerwhore and Phat Tail being called early in the first. The fleet earned its first general recall in the second with the I flag (round the ends rule) making its first appearance and Big Ben again early in the restart. Caleb found enough pressure on the course to earn two bullets, Big Ben after being early and hitting the windward mark in the first race still managed 2nd. Fruitcakes and Powderwhore found the breeze in the second finishing 3 and

Another light air night, sw generally gusting to 5. I like that we have missed the thunder storms three weeks in a row but a bit more pressure would have been more fun.
Tom after much contemplation set up a very short course 2 total length about a mile, it took 50 minutes for the first boat to finish, a break neck pace. A fairly long line was set but it didn't help the crowd at the committee boat which was slightly favored. The fleet split some hunting pressure on the left others seeking clean air on the right. Phat Tail got a good start and worked the right rounding first but didn't jibe until the rest of the lead pack was around. It seems the earlier you jibed the better off you were with what little wind there was coming very forward, beam reaching directly to the mark. Stay Calm rounding fourth found some pressure and captured the bullet. Che, sporting some new handme down sails managed to stay ahead of Epic Flight and Vox. Caleb and Dave Severance of Crazy Horse ran out

It was breezy I’d say a steady 10-12 and the seas 1-2, not really a big deal Kind of a “be careful what you wish for” thing.
But I digress…
The action was Caleb lost two crew members overboard during the first race’ start sequence, right about mid line with boats all around. I didn’t notice instantly. It happened in the last minute.
I let the sequence run and then sounded three horns and abandoned to give everyone a chance to get straightened out. One of Caleb’s guys might still be in the water at this point, not sure. Chris F picked one out of the water and Caleb got the other. Pthers helped, tried etc. I waited for the crew to be transferred back to his boat, not an especially easy task, then started another sequence. Total time lost about a half hour? Don’t really remember.
Then Chris broke his starboard spreader, mast stayed up. Looked to me like the old outboard style with a weld holding the male end of th

Then Chris broke his starboard spreader, mast stayed up. Looked to me like the old outboard style with a weld holding the male end of the spreader to the band around the mast that broke. You know the old typer, rivets etc. - likely didn’t have the newer through mast setup.
Corona had a tough time in the breeze, Powerwhore was short handed, as was Rob - both with only three. And of course nobody used their little jibs. Vox did not fly a kite.
Course was W .60 nm, no gates, breeze due south right from White. Two races done and right after I finished the last boat, the breeze went hard right 100 degrees coming from Little Harbor. Good timing I guess.

Well, I wasn't sure it was going to happen tonight, thunder storms passing right over the race area at 3:30Pm and big one just south at 5:00PM, but enough of a break and no real organization to the systems lead to the conclusion we should give it a try. Its common knowledge that on a stormy night even if the storm passes there is no wind behind it but out we went.
A nice westerly filled in and despite the fact it poured in Rye and even in New Castle the race course was clear.
Tom set up course 2, seven answered the gun in the first and eight in the second. Powderwhore with a full regular crew and enough sense to be ready at the start won the first race. In the second, 3/4 of the fleet was early, ending up at the unfavored pin end, opening up an empty line at the favored end. Powerwhore seized the opportunity and got the bullet in the second. Crazy Horse with only two aboard managed a third in the second, good work.

What an awesome night, when you are shoveling snow this coming winter tonight is what you will be thinking about. A great westerly breeze about 12 knots, clear skies, warm temperatures and fairly flat seas at start time with plenty of puffs and shifts to keep it interesting. 14 boat showed only CHE was amongst the missing.
Tom set course D, up and back twice with a downwind finish for the first and a simple up and back for the second. The line was long by typical Tom standards but just fine as far as I was concerned, maybe fiberglass repair at Great Bay is busy. A few boats were early in the first race, Epic Flight and a few others, I didn't manage to hear their names. Peter Follansbee put in a guest helmsman appearance on Hurricane. Which way to go? The left side worked the best but if you played the shifts in the middle you could do ok. Boats choosing right didn't fair well.

Halyards didn't want to stay put tonight, Vox lost their jib halyard up the mast in the first having to withdraw and the spinnaker bail climbing on Big Ben after the first rounding was impressive. Powderwhore continued their win streak capturing the bullet in the first, Rear Admiral held off a tightly packed fleet in the second getting the win.
Doug Joyce and the crew of Fruicakes put on an impressive feed, steak, rum and rum cake. Great job and thank you.

What a nice breeze, westerly around 15+ knots, flat seas and a few puffs. 10 boats came out to play tonight, a few short handed. The conditions split the sail selection with the light crews going with jibs.
Tom set up course D, windward leeward with gates twice around with a downwind finish for both races, 0.65 mile legs. There was enough shrimping and spinnaker wraps that I was surprised by the meatball sub meal post race. Hurricane had wrapped theirs so tight they were 1/2 way to the shoals before sorting it out. Doug Pinciaro, must be trying to get rid of his crew since the entire lot almost made it into the water on a pretty spectacular wipe out during the first downwind leg of the first race. Caleb found the groove, piloting Sugaree to bullets in both races.
Thanks to Viki and the crew of Vox for great meal, hot meatball subs really hit the spot.

Well, boys and girls thats a great way to end the season, nice fading south westerly around 8-10 knots, gentle seas and clear skies and warm enough for shorts, it sure beats some miserable easterly with big lumps and fog. 13 boats answered the gun, Emmet couldn't get crew for Epic Flight and ended up on Rear Admiral and Stay Calm hauled this morning for the Downeast.
Tom set up course D with gates, twice around with a down wind finish. The line was fairly long and pretty square. Sugaree picked the boat end our read was the pin. In any event the it was a clean start with no boats early. The tide was coming hard during race time especially on the first leg. Fruit Cakes lost their spin halyard up the mast and put on a single halyard clinic. Sugaree grabbed the bullet choosing the starboard gate on both legs. The wind shifted to the right substantially by the time the first race was finished, not enough daylight to fix the course and have a secon
